Why is my tank water all murky??
« on: May 14, 2008, 04:19:26 pm »
My partner and i have recently started up our tropical fish tank. In the last couple of days the water has gotten all murky and cloudy, it doesnt look dirty but just cloudy and was wondering what might have caused this and how to clear it up? ??? The pet shop said you can get some stuff that clears it up but i dont understand how it would work?  :-\ The fish still look happy as larry but we cant see the ones at the back of the tank!  :( Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!!  :)

I suspect the cloudiness is a bacterial bloom.  That happens when the tank cycles.  The fish produce ammonia, which gets eaten by bacteria.  In the initial stages, the bacteria get out of control and cloud up the water.  I would recommend changing about 25% of the water every day until it clears up.

That will make your fish much happier, too.  Once the tank it cycled, you can back off to about 10% water changes per week, or less often, depending on how big the tank is and how many fish you have.
